Mid-Term Postin'

For the most part I feel solid about the writing I’ve done for this class.  I already liked writing to begin with which made things much easier.  Yet most of my experiences of writing have been creative writing.  Learning to write a paper in MLA format is an entirely new endeavor, I’m getting there slowly but surely. I guess that’s what happens when you go to a tiny philanthropic art high-school.  I would have to say that out of the two papers I’ve done so far, I like the second one much more.  It was definitely far more challenging then the first.  As Liz said in my conference with her, “writing about yourself is easy, you could write about yourself forever.”  For the second essay I picked to write about Mad Men, and how I feel the show romanticizes womanizing.  I enjoyed looking at the show (one of my personal favorites) from an outsiders perspective.  It was interesting to pick apart the slight nuances and really get into the raw meat of the show.  I’m happy with my grade right now, and I do think that I deserve the A that I’m getting.  I’ve been very diligent with my work and really tried to apply myself to my full capacity.  I also really enjoy the time spent inside the classroom. Both Tuesdays and Thursdays are long days for me, so it’s nice to end the day in such a positive environment.  Class is never dull, there is always a lively discussion.  I love that we have such an eclectic group of people.  Since we’re all so different it really makes for interesting debates, as well as a super fun time!

  1. Sarah, I just wanted to say that I appreciate your writing and opinions in this class. I enjoy hearing your point of view and I really enjoyed editing your paper! It really opened my eyes in many ways and I now have a different standpoint when it comes to gay marriage and children. I think that many times you have very insightful things to say and they are valuable to our discussions. I agree that class is never dull, I think there is always a lot of energy floating around the room and we do have a melting pot of cultures and outlooks so our debates are very interesting!

  2. I agree with you! I really enjoy our writing class as well as feeling motivated by the class to do well and put all my effort into it. It’s great having driving debates and conversations with everyone in our class and it’s easy to see that the mix of people we have in our class do care about the class and the issues we discuss. I’ve never felt so motivated to do well and find my own opinions, research controversial topics I had little info on, and to really focus on how I was writing.

  3. Don’t worry, once you get the hang of writing in MLA format it gets very easy. I would like to read your second paper because I have no idea what the show “Mad Men” is about. I can see how picking apart one of your favorite shows can be very interesting because you probably realize things that you never noticed beforehand. I agree with you about how our classroom is a very bright environment and how we all have extremely different viewpoints but I also believe that anytime we get into a controversial debate that we are all standing in dangerous ground. The last thing that I want to do during discussion is offend anyone but sometimes it is hard not to when trying to voice my opinion.
